About the bands
Glass
was active in the mid '70's, but you probably never heard of them until recently (if at all) because they never released an album! However, they did do some studio sessions in the '70's and also some high quality recordings of themselves during practice sessions. After breaking up for many years, they have re-banded, formed their own label Relentless Pursuit Records, and released a double-CD of their studio and live recordings. Not only that, they have appeared at the new ProgWest  rock festival in 2001, Baja Prog  in 2002, and they put together the Progman Cometh festival in 2002 (where they, of course played) as well. They've come out of nowhere to being everywhere! Who says progressive rock is dead? In August 2004 they will finally have time to start work on their much-anticipated "comeback" CD. It will be recorded in Seattle, Washington and will contain all new material - their first studio recording in nearly thirty years. Glass is confident it will prove what longstanding Glass Fans have always known: great music like the talent of the musicians that create it, is timeless. http://www.rpursuit.com/GlassBros/Index.asp

Forever Twelve is a five-piece progressive rock band from Los Angeles, California. Their symphonic sound includes female lead vocals, vintage keyboards, both electric and acoustic guitars, electric bass, and complex drums and percussion. The songs on both "Remembrance Branch" and "Spark of Light" range from intense rocking to gentle interludes, feature lots of time signature changes, and have several extended instrumental sections. Their original songs show influences by Genesis, Yes, Camel, and Rush, among others. Forever Twelve have appeared at ProgWest (2002) and Baja Prog (2004). www.forevertwelve.com

The CalProg executive staff met for dinner recently to discuss bands under consideration for next year’s festival and afterwards we adjourned to a small club in Huntington Beach where we saw the Genesis tribute band Gabble Ratchet for the first time. I have to tell you, I went in with low expectations. I had no idea how much fun I’d end up having! The band is made up of extremely talented musicians whose renditions of Genesis’ magical music was spot on, from the “Watcher” ‘tron intro, to the emotionally gripping HACKETT guitar solo in Firth of Fifth (complete with Taurus bass pedals), to a tasty banquet of tunes from The Lamb. Their delivery of these classics of progressive rock was truly inspiring. We were reminded that the strength of this music is the powerfully vivid and emotive writing. GR’s selection of material was perfect and their stage presence had a certain innocence yet intensity. It was a nostalgic journey surrounded by prog fans singing along to every song. Quietly of course, because we are after all, PROGSNOBS! ;-)

So it is with great pleasure that we announce another installment in the continuing series of “CalProg Nights at Steamers”. On Wednesday October 26 Gabble Ratchet will present an evening of Genesis music. They will be performing songs from Genesis’ early years, including music from the albums Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Trick of the Tale and more.

I highly recommend that you call Steamers Jazz club in Fullerton (714-871-8800) as soon as possible to make reservations for this very special evening. There will be a minimal $10 cover charge (hey we gotta pay the band!). The show starts at 8:00 and will go until about 11:00, but plan to get there early and show Terence (the owner) your appreciation for sponsoring CalProg nights by buying one of their deliciously affordable dinners. This is an all age’s venue and the atmosphere is very warm and friendly. It only holds about 120 people so don’t wait too long, it may fill up. .

We hope to see you there!

FROM NEW YORK PIANIST/VOCALIST RACHEL Z
Returning from a 3 year tour with Peter Gabriel, the stunning Rachel Z and her piano trio is reaching audiences and captivating them from the moment they hit their seats. With recording and performing credits including Peter Gabriel, Al DiMeola, Wayne Shorter, Steps Ahead, and Stanley Clarke, Rachels magnificent and exquisite song poems are beautiful and demanding. Manhattan-born and raised Rachel Nicolazzo (aka Rachel Z) had music practically ingrained in her genetic code. Groomed to follow in her mothers operatic footsteps, she began voice lessons at two, started classical piano lessons at seven and attended the opera by age nine. Then I heard Miles Smiles. Listening to Herbie Hancocks harmonies over Wayne Shorters compositions helped her bridge the gap from her classical training to jazz. Rachel Z graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Distinction in Performance award. While performing and recording steadily with the classic fusion band Steps Ahead from 1988 through 1996, she also worked with Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Special EFX, and Angela Bofill. Her connection to saxophone great Wayne Shorter grew from major influence to full-blown collaborator over the two years she worked on his 1995 hit comeback album High Life, for which she built a synthesized orchestral framework to crystallize his musical vision. The CD won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Rachels latest CD Grace is her debut release on the highly acclaimed Chesky label. The album is also significant as it debuts the formidable vocal talents of this acclaimed pianist who was trained as a classical singer from childhood. Grace continues a Rachel Z tradition of combining beautifully crafted original songs with stunningly innovative arrangements of cover songs drawn from the rock and pop worlds. On Grace Rachel selects songs by U2, Nirvana, Kate Bush, Björk and John Lennon to mix with her own compositions binding the ten tracks of the album with spare arrangements and universal themes encompassing love, pain and growth. In addition to extensive touring and recording, Rachel Z is currently an instructor of Jazz Theory and The Jazz Improvisation Ensemble at New School University in New York City.  For more information on this exciting, young artist, visit her website at www.rachelz.com.
